Jake the Pirate

Just so the boy doesn't feel neglected, here's some photos just about Jake. He was at the Kuyper open day on Saturday and had his face painted as a pirate. Very cute, so I thought I'd share some photos.

With this last photo, I decided to do some very quick tweaking. I've upped the contrast and saturation quite a bit, and also the brightness and colour temprature ever so slightly. I would have liked to have done it in something that gives me control over saturation for each of the R/G/B colour chanels, but I was just doing it quickly and didn't have that option, so the reds are a little strong. What do you think? I think it looks good for a first attempt.

Very cute!

With the last photo, perhaps a touch overexposed in the right side of the image on Jake's face, though as you say, something with a bit more user input would have made stuff like that easier to fix...I take it you used Picasa? I'm trying to shift my way from that to the Gimp, but there is a big learning curve so I always fall back on the basic controls of Picasa...

(By the way, this is the longest word verification I've ever had! Eight letters...)

The editing was done just using Windows Photo Gallery (Vista thing) which has a basic set of sliders for brightness/contrast, then colour temp/saturation/tint. I normally use Paint Shop Pro (version 9 I think), and I know that there are options to adjust these things by channel. The saturation in particular was a problem because the reds in his shirt really went mental when I cranked it up. I wanted a highly saturated look, but it kind of stole the attention away from his face, which is where I wanted the focus to be.
